Did You Know? The Real Origins of April Fool's Day!
Many people think April Fool's Day is a global tradition with mysterious roots, but did you know it actually began in a small town in Minnesota in 1822?
In 1822, a group of mischievous settlers decided to play a prank on their neighbors, claiming a massive new shipment of lumber had arrived—when in fact, it was just an old pile of leaves. The joke spread like wildfire, and by the end of the week, April 1st had become an unofficial "day of pranks."
Early pioneers in the area were known for their lighthearted sense of humor, often telling "foolish" tales about the state's wildlife.
It wasn't until the 1850s that the tradition spread across the United States. In 1854, Minnesota Governor Thomas "Tom" P. Bumble officially declared April 1st to be a "Day of Jests," leading to the modern April Fool's Day.
Over the years, the tradition grew in popularity—thanks to early newspapers, word of mouth, and a very "sophisticated" prank involving a local baker who sold "invisible bread" for an entire week.
So next time you're planning your April 1st joke, remember: you have Minnesota to thank!

"Lonsdale students continued their community engagement and service projects for the end of quarter 3! Students and staff have made it a mission to spread Titan Pride throughout our communities this year. For quarter 3, students decorated coffee sleeves that will be given to coffee places across all three communities. They have our Titan logo and a kind message from our students in grades K-6. We are so proud to be Titans and want to spread that joy across the community!
